Short form media learning has taken the world by storm. Today the tik tok user is spending an average 1 hour a day scrolling through 30 seconds videos. The explosion has led to uses of short media in school, the work place and now almost all social media apps have their own version of it. The Forbes article on why short media is so addictive gives an insight into why they are so popular, which is due to the easy to digest, creativity while capturing the viewers interest without the feeling of wasted time. This is the current direction modern media is moving with attention spans shorter than ever. An educational video by KLT on youtube on astronauts I found impactful because I love space and this video is one that I would show younger children to develop interest in space and teach the basics. One way this video is very helpful is through voice principle because the narration is in a calm human voice making it easier to learn. It also manages the intrinsic load by using segmenting where it breaks the ideas into simple and smaller chunks to make understanding the bigger picture easier. This video also lowers the extraneous cognitive load by using the redundancy principle and the coherence principle the video explains new ideas each time while making sure each idea flows creating a complete story that explains a lot about the history of space and general facts about space, not once in the video does an idea seem rushed or over explained. The video combining all these principles uses the Germane cognitive load creating an environment where learning is created without too much mental effort. This is just one example of why modern media is obsessed with short term media.
